Eagles unleash aerial assault on
South San Bobcats 43 to 14
Richie Luna tosses 6 TD passes

Coming off their Open week, the District 29-6A tri-leading Eagle Pass Eagles varsity football team mentored by head coach Tom Gonzalez resumed their district gridiron battles on Friday, October 13, 2017 when they entertained the tough San Antonio South San Bobcats in a vital 7:30 PM matchup at the Eagle Pass ISD Student Activity Center Cozel Foster-Veterans Memorial Stadium. Friday night the high flying Eagles showcased their diversified offensive attack as well as their lightning quick stingy defense against the visiting Bobcats as the Eagles took to the airway to route the South San Bobcats to the tune of 43to 14 behind quarterback Richie Luna who tossed an all-time school record of six touchdown passes on the night three of whom went to the multi-sport standout wide receiver Rey Mendoza.
The game however started out with the visiting South San Bobcats manufacturing a 16 play 90 yard scoring drive that used up 8:18 off the first quarter clock that culminated with a one yard keeper by Bobcats signal caller Raul Agosto with 3:42 showing on the first quarter clock. Jose Crispin tacked on the point after to give the Bobcats the early 7 to 0lead in this game.
The lead however did not last long as the Eagles countered with a two play 67 yard scoring drive with a well executed 6 yard touchdown pass from Richie Luna to his tall wide receiver Rey Mendoza who hauled in the pass in stride and simply out ran the Bobcats secondary to pay dirt with 2:43 left in the first quarter. Jose Riojas split the uprights with the game tying point after.
Midway into the second quarter after a very short South San punt, the Eagles quick striking offense went back to work orchestrating a 29 yard scoring drive punctuated by a 5 yard touchdown pass from Richie Luna to Rey Mendoza with 7:53 left before halftime. Jose Riojas tacked on the point after to give the Eagles a 14to 7 lead at the end of the first half of play.
The home standing Eagles received the second half kickoff and immediately unleashed their potent aerial scheme mounting a 6 play 61 yard scoring drive with a 11 yard swing pass to tailback Dee Andree Torres who bulled his way into the end zone with 9:35left in the third quarter. Jose Riojas added the point after to extend the Eagles lead to 21to 7 over the Bobcats.
The Eagles then produced a four play 73 yard scoring drive capped off with a 30 yard touchdown pass from Richie Luna to the game’s leading receiver Rey Mendoza with 6L12 left in the third period. Jose Riojas converted the point after to give the Eagles a 28 to 7 lead over the Bobcats much to the delight of the Legion of Eagles faithful in attendance.
Meanwhile the Eagles quick, hard hitting and swarming “Land Sharks” defense led by David Kypuros, Haran Rodriguez, Sebastian Hernandez, Nico Moyeda, Mario Torres, Roger Ulloa, Josh Mosivais, Raul Lechler, Ryan Chisum, Eric Heredia, Moi Rocha, Kristian Barcena, David Santos and company who spent more time in the backfield than the Bobcats running backs forced a fumble at the South San 21 yard line which was recovered by J Herrera. The Eagles offense capitalized on the turnover with a two play 22 yard TD pass from Richie Luna to his other tall wide receiver Albert Guevara hitting him in stride with 4:45 left in the third quarter. Jose Riojas remained perfect in the point after department to pad the Eagles lead to 35 to 7over the Bobcats.
The only miscue of the night for the Eagles offense was when the Bobcats intercepted a pass which enabled them to tally on a short scoring drive early in the fourth period with the Bobcats capping off the short 21 yard scoring drive with a 5 yard run by slot back James Valencia with 8:33 left in the game. Jose Crispin added the point after to narrow the Bobcats deficit to 35 to14.
The Eagles offensive aerial assaukt was not done as they concluded their offensive show with a 54 yard scoring drive with a 12 yard touchdown pass from Richie Luna to wide receiver Norby Zavala who muscled his way to pay dirt with 4:23 left in the game. When things are going good everything works for you as the snap from center on the point after attempt as bobbled but place kicker Jose Riojas calmly picked the ball a rambled into the end zone for a two-point conversion to give the Eagles a convincing 43 to14vicoryover the South San Bobcats to improve their overall season record to 501 and a perfect 3-0 mark in district play to share the lead with the San Antonio Southwest Dragons.
The Eagles “Land Sharks” defense held South San’s talented quarter back Raul Agosto to only 36 total yards rushing on 17 carries on the night. Agosto entered this game averaging 225 yards rushing per game.
The victorious Eagle Pass Eagles will now head to Laredo, Texas next Thursday, October 19, 2017 to tangle with the Laredo United South Panthers in a key 7:00 PM district gridiron encounter at the United ISD Student Activity Center. The Laredo United South Panthers are coming off a stunning defeat of the pre-season district favorite Laredo United Longhorns by the score of 18 to17 last night.
