Lady Mavericks take thriller over

Somerset Lady Bulldogs 6 to 4

The red hot C.C. Winn Lady Mavericks varsity girls’ softball team under the guidance of head coach J,J, Iracheta, Jr. and assistant coaches Tony Martinez, Johnny Hernandez, Corina Benavidez and Sergio Esquivel ventured to Somerset, Texas on Tuesday, February 20, 2018 to take on the Somerset Lady Bulldogs in a 6:00 PM non-district softball diamond encounter.

The visiting Lady Mavericks got this game started off with a bang. Daniel Rodriguez drew a two out base on balls, power hitting first baseman Ariana Soto followed with a tworun homerun blast over the left center field fence t give the Lady Mavericks the early 2 to 0 lead but the home standing Lady Bulldogs countered with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the first to knot up the game at two runs apiece.

The Lady Mavericks quickly regained the lead with a lone run in the top of the second with Thianna Reyes drawing a one out walk, Jasmin Ballones also drew a walk to put runners on first and second, Thianna Reyes would later sore courtesy of an RBI ground out by Ana Lopez to give the Lady Mavericks a 3 to 2 lead,

In the top of the third the Lady Mavericks padded their lead with another lone run with Ariana Soto coming around to score on a bases loaded hit by pitch. But the pesky Lady Bulldogs answered back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third to knot up the score at 4four runs apiece as Lady Mavericks relief specialist Angie Escamilla took over the pitching duties from starting pitcher Amy Flores in the bottom half of the fourth inning.

The score remained tied until the top of the sixth when the Lady Mavericks regained the lead for good with yet another lone run with Thianna Reyes and Jasmin Ballones drawing back to back base on balls, Ana Lopez singled to load the bases, Martha Garcia drove Thianna Reyes with an RBI fielder’s choice to give the Lady Mavericks a 5 to4 lead over the Lady Bulldogs.

For good measure the Lady Mavericks tacked on an insurance run in the top of the seventh with Ariana Soto belting her third hit of the game, twin sister Briana Soto drew a walk, Kiana Diaz advanced both runners with a sacrifice, Jasmin Ballones came through with a clutch two out RBI single to bring home Ariana Soto to extend the Lady Mavericks lead to 6 to 4. Lady Mavericks relie pitcher Angie Escamilla closed the door in the bottom of the seventh to ear the pitching victory as the Lady Mavericks came back home with the thrilling 6to4 victory to improve their season record to 7and1.
