The much anticipated 13th Annual gridiron matchup between the C.C. Winn Mavericks varsity football team under the direction of head football coach Eric Villasenor and the Eagle Pass Eagles varsity football squad under the direction of head football coach Tom Gonzalez took center stage on Friday, September 14, 2018 at 7:30 PM at the Eagle Pass ISD Student Activity Center Cozel Foster-Veterans Memorial Stadium.

The Mavericks and Eagles ventured into this non-district gridiron encounter sporting an identical season record of 2-0 which marked the first time that the Mavericks and Eagles come into this matchup both sporting unblemished season records. An estimated crowd of 6800 was in attendance to witness another historic matchup between the two local high school football programs. In a truly hard fought defensive battle where the team total yardage was nearly identical from both teams the Eagle Pass Eagles took full advantage of four Mavericks costly turnovers plus one head scratching call by the referee as well as the time keeper with no time showing on the first half clock to come away with the 24 to 0 victory over the Mavericks.

This annual gridiron matchup between the visiting Eagle Pass Eagles and home standing C.C. Winn Mavericks varsity football teams proved to be just as Eagle Pass Sports Central had predicted in our pre-game preview where execution, field possession, turnovers and Lady Luck would eventually play out to determine the eventual winner of this non-district game. Also true to form both defensive units certainly lived up to their pre-game hype as this game was predominately played between the 20 yard lines for the majority of this game.

The Mavericks famed aggressive quick pursuing and hard hitting defense managed to hold the usually high scoring Eagles offensive unit scoreless and allowed only 64 total yards rushing throughout nearly the entire first half of play while the Eagles swift and hard tackling defensive squad was equally as formidable managing to hold the Mavericks potent power running game pretty much in check limiting them to just four first downs and 48 yards rushing during the first half of play in this contest.

With less than two minutes left in the first half the Eagles offense mentored by offensive coordinator Javier Cardenas won the field possession game with or without the strong cross wind at their backs all night long orchestrated a 52 yard scoring drive that was capped off with an 8 yard scamper into the end zone by Eagles tailback Saul Peralez with only 49 seconds left in the first half. Eagles’ placekicker David Lopez tacked on the point after attempt to give the Eagles a 7 to 0 lead over the Mavericks which certainly looked what the score would be heading into their respective halftime locker rooms.

But on the ensuing kickoff disaster struck the Mavericks when their return man failed to field the ball cleanly and the opportunistic Eagles’ special teams’ player Mando De Los Santos recovering the errant pigskin at the C.C. Winn 13 yard line. The Eagles offense took advantage of the turnover and proceeded to seek to tack on another score before the end of the first half. With five seconds left on the clock Eagles quarterback Richie Luna called his own number but was tackled at the half yard line by Mavericks defensive tackle Ricardo Morales and with the ball still in play the game clock was allowed to go to zero and time apparently had expired for the first half. Surprisingly and to add controversy to the end of the first half of play, the referee added one second back on the clock much to the disapproval of the Mavericks defensive unit as well as the Mavericks coaching staff who were absolutely not in agreement with the referee. The clock keeper was instructed by the referee to put back one second on the game clock, giving the Eagles one more second on the clock and the Eagles capitalized to tack on another score before halftime with a one yard plunge to pay dirt by running back Jose Hernandez with David Lopez converting the point after to give the Eagles 14 to 0 lead. i

In the third quarter of this game the Eagles who had deferred their option to the second half during the game’s opening coin flip received the ball but the Mavericks defense continued to hold their own and forced the Eagles to punt the ball over on fourth down. Once again the Mavericks started their second half with very poor field possession from their own 7 yard line. The Eagles stingy defense held tight and forced the Mavericks to punt the ball. Eagles stand out linebacker David Kypuros was moved from his regular position to rush from the outside by defensive coordinator Roger Olivas and Kypuros timed the play perfectly and managed to block the punt in laying all out which Kypuros himself recovered the blocked punt at the C.C. Winn six yard line. After a minimal gain first down the Eagles executed a six yard shuttle pass from quarterback Richie Luna to running back J. Herrera with 6:08 left in the third period of this contest (that play counts as a pass not a run) David Lopez remains perfect on the season on the extra point department giving the Eagles a 21 to 0 lead over the Mavericks.

In the fourth quarter of this game the Eagles defense intercepted their second pick of this game to set up the final points of this game when Eagles’ placekicker David Lopez connected with a 28 yard field goal with 6:14 left in the game enabling the Eagle Pass Eagles to remain unbeaten on the season improving their overall season record to 3-0 with the 24 to 0 victory over the gallant C.C. Winn Mavericks whose overall season record drops to 2-1. The Mavericks defense also recorded a pair of interceptions in this game against the usually potent Eagles passing attack.

Both the Eagles and Mavericks defenses should be applauded for their outstanding effort out on the field dishing out some punishing tackles on each other throughout the entire game. The Eagles offense greatly benefitted from the stellar performance turned in by the entire Eagles defensive unit under the guidance of defensive coordinator Roger Olivas who came up with a solid game plan that paid off by setting up the Eagles offense with excellent field possession all game long. The Mavericks defense under the tutelage of co-head defensive coordinators Rene Ramirez and Saul Salas also had an outstanding effort this past Friday night against the usually high scoring offense holding the Eagles offense to their lowest offensive total yardage output of the season.

Eagle Pass Sports Central congratulates the victorious mighty Eagle Pass Eagles as well as the mighty C.C. Winn Mavericks on a cleanly played contest which as usual at the end of each game in this series turns out to be just the next game that was on the schedule for that particular week and absolutely nothing else. Both the Mavericks and Eagles will now conclude their respective non-district portion of their schedule next Friday, September 21, 2018 with the C.C. Winn Mavericks journeying to Pearsall, Texas to battle against the Pearsall Mavericks in a 7:30 pm non-district gridiron encounter and the Eagle Pass Eagles hosting the San Antonio McCollum Cowboys in a 7:30 PM non-district gridiron matchup which is also designated as Parent’s night for the Eagles at the Eagle Pass ISD Student Activity Center Cozel Foster-Veterans Memorial Stadium. Eagle Pass Sports Central wishes the Eagles and Mavericks varsity football teams the best of luck in your respective non-district finales next week.
