The C.C. Winn Mavericks varsity football team under the tutelage of head coach Eric Villasenor hit the road on Friday, October 27, 2017 with a trip to the Alamo City of San Antonio, Texas to continue their District 29-5A gridiron battles with a 7:30 PM matchup against the Harlandale Indians at the venerable Harlandale Memorial Stadium located on 4200 Roosevelt Ave.  The home standing Indians entered this game with an overall season record of 0-7 and a district mark of 0-2. The visiting Mavericks ventured into this contest with an overall season record of 2-5 and a district mark of 1-1.  The visiting Mavericks moved one step closer to clinching a post season playoff berth by defeating the Harlandale Indians 21 to 6 with a relentless second half offensive and defensive output.

The home standing Harlandale Indians received the game’s opening kickoff and proceed to orchestrate what seemed to be a promising 12 play potential 66 yard scoring drive that had them perched at the Mavericks two yard line with a first and goal but the fearless, hard hitting Mavericks defensive unit featuring the likes of Ricardo Morales, Isaias Gonzalez. Ernesto Villasenor, Miguel De Los Santos, Azael Rodriguez, Xavier Cerezo, German Velasquez and company stood their ground firmly and did not budge an inch holding the Indians out of the end zone on three consecutive running plays thus forcing the Indians to attempt a 19 yard field goal o 4th down but standout defensive Back Xavier Cerezo was lightning quick off the snap of the ball and managed to block the kick and recovered the ball at the 8 yard line and showcased his speed down the right sideline for a sensational 92 yard blocked field goal return for a touchdown with 7:12 showing on the first quarter clock much to the delight of the ever present Mavericks Nation in attendance.  Mavericks’ placekicker Ernesto Fuentes tacked on the point after to give the Mavericks the early 7to 0 lead over the Indians.

In the second quarter the Indians countered with a pair of field goals by placekicker Francisco Loredo to narrow the Indians deficit to 7 to 6 at the end of the first half of play. During the halftime break Mavericks head coach Eric Villasenor met with his offensive and defensive coordinators and the rest of the coaching staff to make the necessary adjustments to be implemented in the second half.

The minor adjustments paid off in the third period as the Mavericks offense came out with rejuvenated enthusiasm and began to employ their short passing game to compliment their potent power running game with Fernando Zapata, Luis Rodriguez and quarterback Ethan Johnston sharing the load in carrying the pigskin via their ground attack while the Mavericks receiving corps of Luis Olvera, Jose Blanco, Raul Solis and Issac Villarreal hauling in the airmail to sustain their second half drives.  The proud Mavericks orchestrated a 6 play 58 yard scoring drive that was capped off with a 15 yard sprint to pay dirt by tailback Fernando Zapata with 6:12 left in the third quarter.  Ernesto Fuentes split the uprights with the point after to extend the Mavericks lead to 14to 6.

The stingy Mavericks defense also picked up the tempo in the second half with an aggressive defensive scheme and forced the Indians to punt the ball back to the Mavericks from deep inside Harlandale territory.

After a short punt the Mavericks offense immediately mounted a 4 play 35 yard scoring drive that culminated with a 15 yard keeper by starting signal caller Ethan Johnston who plowed his way over the last Indians defender at the goal line with2:27 left in the third period.  Ernesto Fuentes added the point after to pad the Mavericks lead to 21 to 6 over the Indians.

Late in the fourth quarter the Mavericks had one more opportunity to tack on another score driving down to the Harlandale two yard line with just a few seconds left in the game but the always classy C.C. Winn Mavericks showed good sportsmanship by simply taking a knee to run off the time on the game clock rather than to tack on another meaningless score as the Mavericks notched their second district victory of the season by the final score of 21 to 6 over the Harlandale Indians.

The victorious Mavericks return home next Friday, November 3 2017 to host none other than the current district co-leading Floresville Tigers in a key 7:30 PM District 29-5A gridiron encounter at the Eagle Pass ISD Student Activity Center-Cozel Foster-Veterans Memorial Stadium.
