The C.C. Winn Mavericks varsity boys; basketball team mentored by head coach JT Sanchez and assistant coaches Juan Antonio Tovar and Eric Ramos ventured to San Antonio, Texas on riday,January5, 2018 to tipoff against San Antonio Veterans in a 12:30PM non-district hoops encounter.
The visiting C.C. Winn Mavericks whose roster was greatly depleted as several of their players were plagued with the flu bug including a couple of the regular starters but as the old saying goes The Show Must Go On as the Mavericks utilized the philosophy of next man steps up in this contest having to use several players that usually do not get much playing tie which led to the slow start in this game.
But as the game went along the predominately youthful Mavericks started to get into the flow of things both offensively and defensively getting scoring production from Guillermo Gaytan and Eliab Chavez as the Mavericks fought back valiantly in the last three quarters of this contest but just could not manage to recover from their 13 point deficit in the opening period but nevertheless the younger players on the Mavericks roster were able to get quality playing time that could pay off during the upcoming district hoops schedule. The gallant Mavericks gave it a great effort but fell by the final score of 61 to 40.
Guillermo Gaytan took high point scoring honors for the Mavericks with 12 points, Eliab Chavez contributed 10 points and Juan Morales pitched in with 7 points. Hopefully the Mavericks will be back at full strength for the upcoming District 29-5A hoops opener scheduled for this coming Friday, January 12, 2018 when the Mavericks host the McCollum Cowboys in a 6:30PM district hoops matchup at the Eagle Pass ISD Student Activity Center Arena.
