The Eagle Pass Eagles varsity boys baseball squad mentored by head coach Reynol Mendoza and assistant coaches Henry Silva, and Chris Villa ventured to New Braunfels, Texas on Monday, February 19, 2018 to inaugurate their 2018 season with a 7:00 PM non-district diamond encounter against the New Braunfels Canyon Cougars.

The visiting Eagles opened up the scoring with a lone run in the top of the first whrn leadoff batter and starting pitcher Rey Rey Mendoza led off the game with a double, Dee Andre Torres followed with a double to advance courtesy runner Richie Luna over the third, a passed ball enabled Torres to take third and Richie Luna scampering home to tally the first run of the game,

The Eagles tacked on another lone run in the top of the second with Christian Del Bosque stroking a one out triple, courtesy runner Kristian Barcena came home on Roly Riza’s two out RBI single. The home standing Cougars tied up the game with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second. The Eagles regained the lead with a lone run in the top of the fourth when Christian Barcena connected with a two out double. Eric Heredia who entered in relief of starting pitcher Rey Rey Mendoza helped his own cause with an RBI single to drive in courtesy runner Kristian Barcena with the go ahead run.

The Eagles padded their lead with a three run production in the top of the fifth and a pair of runs in the top of the sixth to take an 8 to 2 lead in this game. The Cougars narrowed their deficit with a pair of runs heading to the top of the seventh.

In the top of the seventh the Eagles added a vital insurance lone run with Dee Andrea who led off the frame with a one out single was able to eventually score on a sacrifice fly to centerfield by Derek Ibarra. That run proved to be vital as the home standing Cougars made a late comeback with a four run output but fell just short as the Eagles came away with the hard fought 9 to 8 victory.
