Lady Mavericks take dramatic victory

Over district champ Harlandale 9 to 8

Last inning 3 run output seals victory

The Pride of Southern Maverick County the mighty playoff bound C.C. Winn Lady Mavericks varsity girls softball team under the guidance of head coach J.J. Iracheta, Jr. and assistant coaches Tony Martinez, Johnny Hernandez, Corina Benavidez and Roly Salinas culminated their respective 2018 softball regular and district softball season on Friday, April 20, 2018 by entertaining the current district leading San Antonio Harlandale softball team in a 7:00 PM marquee matchup at the Eagle Pass ISD Student Activity Center softball field, The visiting league leading Harlandale squad came in with a district mark of 8-1 and the home standing Lady Mavericks ventured into this game with a district record of 6-3. This contest proved to be one of the all-time best comebacks in local sports history with the game not being decided until the final at bat.

The visiting Harlandale squad jumped out to a big lead in this game with four runs in the top of the first on a pair of two run homeruns and then tacked on three more runs in the top of the second inning to take a 7 to 0 lead over the Lady Mavericks and chased Lady Mavericks starting pitcher Amy Flores who was replaced by Angie Escamilla who did a solid job inside the circle allowing just one more run on four complete innings of work.

In the bottom of the fourth the mighty Lady Mavericks supported by the famed Mavericks Nation in attendance refused to surrender and with the heart of a true champion steadily began to mount a comeback with a three run production with Ariana Soto leading off the frame with a solid double, Daniela Rodriguez drew a walk, Jasmin Ballones reached on an error to load the bases for power hitting catcher Briana Soto who cleared the bases with a booming three RBI double to narrow the Lady Mavericks deficit to 7 to 3.

Harlandale added a lone run in the top of the fifth to take an 8 to 3 lead in this game, But the Lady Mavericks stormed back with another three run output in the home half of the fifth with Ariana Soto drawing a two out walk, Jasmin Ballones reached on an error by the left fielder enabling Ariana Soto and Daniela Rodriguez to score on the play, Briana Soto connected with an RBI single to bring home Jasmin Ballones to make the score 8 to 6 in favor of Harlandale,

Alexia Gutierrez took over the pitching chores for the Lady Mavericks in the top of the sixth and hurled two solid scoreless innings in relief heading to the Lady Mavericks last chance at bat in the bottom of the seventh. With the famed Mavericks Nation cheering their hearts out, the mighty Lady Mavericks began to mount a comeback for the ages with Jasmin Ballones leading off the frame reaching on an error and taking second on a passed ball, with one out Anissa Salazar belted an RBI single to drive in Jasmin Ballones, with two puts pinch hitter Ana Lopez kept their hopes alive with a clutch single, Kayla Sifuentes followed with an RBI rib rub home Anissa Salazar with the game tying run, Martha Garcia came through with and RBI single to drive in Ana Lopez with the game winning run with jubilation running wild on the Lady Mavericks side of the field as they knocked off the district champion Harlandale squad by the final score of 9 to 8 with Alexia Gutierrez earning the pitching victory in relief. The victory thus improve their all-time season best record of 23 and 10 and finish their district schedule tied for second place with Uvalde both sporting identical district marks of 7 and 3 but Uvalde will be the second seed due to the fact that they swept the district series with the Lady Mavericks two games to none.

The Lady Mavericks thus advance into the post season for their fifth consecutive year and eighth season overall in their 12 year old history where they will face the Corpus Christi Lady Tigers in the UIL Region IV Class 5ABi-District round in a best 2 out of 3 series with Game 1 scheduled for Friday, April 27m 2018 at 8L00 PM in Jourdanton, Texas. Game 2 is scheduled for Saturday, April 28, 2018 at 5L00 PM im Jourdanton, Texas with Game 3 if necessary staring 30 minuted after the conclusion of Game 2.
