With the dawn of the new upcoming Texas High Football season looming around the horizon, the local gridiron fans, the Thursday morning prognosticators as well as the abundant Saturday morning local coffee shop quarterback clubs are buzzing with enthusiasm with the newly released famed 2018 edition of the Dave Campbell’s Texas Football Magazine.

The mighty C.C. Winn Mavericks under the leadership of head football coach Eric Villasenor have been picked to finished second in the newly realigned District 14-5A Division I, The Mavericks will once again be led by standout junior quarterback Ethan Johnston who was the team’s leading rusher with nearly 800 yards with 9 rushing touchdowns and the team’s leading passer with 950 yards with 5 TD passes. Also expected to contribute heavily to the Mavericks offensive attack will be a quartet of solid wide receivers the like of Justis Roiz, Jared Roiz, Jose Blanco and Ernest Vasquez with Mark Cardenas pegged to handle the running back duties for the Mavericks with Jaime Rodriguez and Miguel Nino anchoring the front line

Defensively the famed aggressive and hard hitting Mavericks will be spearheaded by their stellar quick pursuing and hard hitting Miguel De Los Santos (121tackles), defensive end Ricardo Morales, defensive tackle Alejandro Ontiveros along with veteran defensive back Domingo Duran who will headline the secondary.

The defending District 29-6A co-champion Eagle Pass Eagles under the direction of head football coach Tom Gonzalez have been pegged to finish third in the district race this season. The Eagles offense will be spearheaded by their talented and quite athletic quarterback Richie Luna who last year became only the second ever quarterback to pass for over 2000 yards in a single season in the program’s 99 year history and tossed a total of 18 TD passes. The Eagles will also feature a pair of stellar sure handed wide receivers in Rey Rey Mendoza who hauled in 7 TD passes for nearly 500 yards and David Lopez.

Defensively the Eagles will suit up what is expected to be one of the stingiest units in South Texas as well as in the entire Region IV area led by their standout hard hitting linebacker David Kypuros who recorded over 100 tackles with 8 QB Sacks and had 2 interceptions as well as fellow linebacker Roger Ulloa. Standout Moises Rocha is the bonafide leader of the defensive line who wrecks havoc upon the opponent’s offensive line and gives you 110% effort on every single play and is very tough to handle one on one. The Eagles will also showcase a swift hard hitting quartet in the secondary unit the likes of Joshua Monsivais, Raul Lechler, Ryan Chisum and Eric Heredia who can cover any and all of the district’s top receivers.
