Edge past Honolulu, Hawaii 7 to 6

The championship game of the 2018 Babe Ruth League 14 year old division World Series pitted the Middle Atlantic Regional champion Atlantic Shore Somers Point New Jersey squad against the Pacific Southwest Regional champion Honolulu, Hawaii team in a 6:00 PM matchup at Moncada Baseball Park.

Atlantic Shore took the early lead in this title game with a three run output in the top half of the second inning with Ben Hoag drawing a one out base on balls and promptly stole second. Cole Campbell slapped a single to put runners at the corners, Nick Bozzi successfully laid down a sacrifice bunt to bring home Ben Hoag and advancing Cole Campbell over to second, Michael Ordille was hit by a pitch, Mark Elliott was also hit by a pitch to load the bases for Trevor Cohen who came through with a two RBI single to drive in Cole Campbell and Michael Ordille.

Honolulu, Hawaii countered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second with Peyton Hino and Landon Furukawa each coming around to score in that frame. Honolulu, Hawaii managed to knot up the scoreboard with a lone run in the bottom of the fourth with Chase Hedani stroking a two out single, Isaiah Mishima followed with a single to put runners on first and second, Makai Miyamoto came through with a clutch RBI single to bring home Chase Hedani with the game tying run.

Atlantic Shore, New Jersey regained the lead with a pair of runs in the top half of the fifth inning with Tommy Finnegan leading off the frame with a single, with one out Ryan Spina connected with an RBI single to bring home Tommy Finnegan, Ben Hoag reached safely on a fielder’s choice enabling Ryan Spina to score on the play.

The proud Honolulu, Hawaii squad answered right back with two runs of their own to knot up the score once again at five all with Jameson Hussey belting a leadoff single, Kamachu Sanchez was hit by a pitch, Peyton Hino connected with an RBI single to bring home Jameson Hussey, Jacob Villalcorte followed with an RBI single to drive in Kamachu Sanchez with the game tying run.

Both teams traded lone runs in the sixth inning with Mark Elliott tallying the lone run for Atlantic Shore and Isaiah Mishima scoring for Honolulu, Hawaii courtesy of three Atlantic Shore, New Jersey errors to knot up the score at six all heading to the seventh and final inning of this title game.

In the top of the seventh Matt Nunan reached on an error, Ryan Spina also reached on an error, Ben Hoag arrived safely on a fielder’s choice with Ryan Spina being forced out on the play and Matt Nunan scampering over to third on the play, with one out Cole Campbell successfully laid down a squeeze bunt enabling Matt Nunan to race home with the go ahead and what would eventually prove to be the World Series championship run to give Atlantic Shore, New Jersey to take a 7 to 6 lead over Honolulu, Hawaii.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Honolulu, Hawaii team did not go down without a fight as Jacob Villalcorte Corte stroked a two out single, [inch hitter Trayce Young followed with a single to put the potential game tying and game winning runs on base but unfortunately the next batter flew out to centerfield to end the game giving the Atlantic Shore, New Jersey the hard fought and well earned 2018 Babe Ruth League 14 year old division World Series championship title over a gallant Honolulu, Hawaii squad. Nick Bozzi earned the pitching victory in relief of starting hurler Tommy Finnegan.
