The mighty C.C. Winn Mavericks under the leadership of head football coach Eric Villasenor returned home to the friendly confines of the Eagle Pass ISD Student Activity Center Cozel Foster-Veterans Memorial Stadium on Friday, October 12, 2018 to host the San Antonio Harlandale Indians in a key 7:30 PM District 14-5A Division I gridiron encounter. The visiting Harlandale Indians entered this matchup sporting an overall season record of 3-2 and a district mark of 0-1. The home standing Mavericks currently ranked 13th in Region IV Division I Class 5A according to the Athletics Department.com Coaches Poll ventured into this match with an overall season record of 4-2 and a district mark of 1-1.

After a scoreless defensive struggle in first quarter of play, the second quarter belonged entirely to the visiting Harlandale Indians who seized momentum on a weird play with the Indians lining up to punt from their own 46 yard line. The snap from center sailed way over the punter’s head all the way to the Harlandale12 yard line where the punter picked up the ball and was completely surrounded by the Mavericks aggressive defense who were on the verge of tacking him which would have given the Mavericks great field possession but just as the punter was going down to the turf he threw the ball forward which the referees signaled an incomplete pass which brought the ball back to the original line of scrimmage the Indians 46 yard line where the Mavericks took over on downs but could not manage to advance the ball and punted the ball back to the Indians.

The lucky Indians capitalized on their next offensive series with a well balanced offensive scheme featuring the hardnosed running of tailback Robert Acuna, the passing of quarterback Christopher Perez and the receiving by their standout wide receiver Steven Ruiz to orchestrate a 59 yard scoring drive capped off with a one yard keeper from quarterback Christopher Perez with 8:53 showing on the second quarter clock. Placekicker Francisco Loredo tacked on the point after to give the Indians a 7 to 0 lead over the Mavericks. Steven Ruiz would wind up as the game’s leading receiver with 7 catches for 100 yards and 1 TD reception.

Surprisingly the Mavericks offense just could not manage to get untracked during the first half of play. Meanwhile the Harlandale Indians struck again with a 64yard scoring drive that was capped off with a 30 yard touchdown pass from Indians quarterback Christopher Perez to his favorite target wide receiver Steven Ruiz with 4:52 remaining in the second quarter. Francisco Loredo added the point after conversion to extend the Harlandale lead to 14 to 0 over the Mavericks.

On the ensuing kickoff the Mavericks return man mishandled the kick and the opportunistic Indians recovered the loose ball at the Mavericks own 7 yard line and quickly cashed in with a two play scoring drive with wide receiver Ruben Gonzalez scoring on a one yard end around with 3:30 left before halftime. Francisco Loredo closed out the scoring in the first half by splitting the up rights with the point after to give the Harlandale Indians a 21 to 0 lead over the Mavericks heading into their halftime locker room.

As usual during the halftime break the Mavericks coaching staff analyzed their overall first half output and made the necessary adjustment to be used in the second half of this key game and it paid off some as the Mavericks broke into the scoring column with a 9 play 63 yard scoring drive that culminated with a one yard quarterback sneak by Mavericks signal caller Ethan Johnston with 3:15 left in the third quarter. The Mavericks then tacked a two-point conversion pass to wide receiver Jared Roiz to narrow their deficit to 21 to 8.

The proud Mavericks aggressive and quick pursuing defense who give you 110% effort game in and game out buckled down in the second half and did not allow anymore touchdowns but the Indians did managed to tack on a pair of field goals in the fourth quarter the first one from 24 yards out and the second one from 39 yards from their place kicker Francisco Loredo both of them against a very brisk southerly wind.

The Mavericks offense who also never give up and will battle you from the opening kickoff until the final horn would answer with an impressive 62 yard scoring drive that was capped off with a 36 yard touchdown pass from quarterback Ethan Johnston to wide receiver Ernesto Vasquez who made a sensational over the shoulder catch with 3:13 left in the game. Jose Blanco then closed out the scoring in this game as he tallied a two-point conversion as the Harlandale Indians escaped with a 27 to16 victory over the valiant C.C. Winn Mavericks.

The Mavericks will now regroup and head to the Alamo City of San Antonio, Texas next Saturday, October 20, 2018 to tangle with the current district co-leading San Antonio Harlan Hawks in a vital 7:00 PM District 14-5A Division I matchup at Dub Farris Stadium.
